1. PHILOSOPHY
2. COURSES AND AWARDS
Principles of Signal Processing
-
In the year of 2017, I started a new undergraduate course named “Principles of Signal Processing” in Tsinghua University.
This course focuses on the theory and practice of signal processing, including the transformation, analysis and synthesis of signal. Specifically, Fourier transform and its fast algorithms, Z-transform, discrete-time system, digital filer design are covered in the course. Pioneering technologies such as wavelet transform and uncertainty principle are also introduced to expand students’ horizon. Students master relative knowledge via not only listening in class and finishing written work, but also accomplishing practical assignments like FDM (Frequency Division Multiplexing) and DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency).
Fundamentals and Applications of Multimedia Technology
-
In the year of 2010, I started a new undergraduate/graduate course named “Fundamentals and Applications of Multimedia Technology” in Tsinghua University and have been teaching that course since then.
This course focuses on fundamentals, key techniques, development and application of multimedia technology. Main topics covered in the course include (but not limited to): acquisition, processing and displaying techniques of visual signals; compression techniques of image and video; understanding and retrieval of multimedia contents; digital audio processing; hyper text, hyper media and semantic net. Three projects respectively regarding image, video and audio processing, plus optional extra assignments are included to develop students’ skills and attainments. Meanwhile, series lectures of cutting-edge multimedia technology are also open to the students, which are jointly supported by Microsoft Research Asia and Sogou.com.
Professional Practice: HCI and Biometrics Recognition
-
In the year of 2008, I started a new graduate course named “HCI and Biometrics Recognition” in Tsinghua University and have been teaching that course since then.
Professional practice is a large comprehensive, innovative, practical and researchful course, which synthetically utilize students’ skills gained in professional courses and pave the way for their diploma projects. HCI and biometrics recognition is one of its topics, covering human-computer interaction, signal processing, pattern recognition, etc. Students are required to independently finish a comprehensive HCI or biometrics recognition system, including the design and implementation of both hardware and software, together with system performance test. Each year, students’ innovative results can be achieved in the course, which are published in high-level conferences and journals, or win prizes in high-profile competitions.
Teaching Service and Awardss
-
I have been the vice chair of Teaching Affairs Committee of Department of Computer Science and Technology since 2016.
The course “HCI and Biometrics Recognition” has been selected as one of the “Excellent Courses of Tsinghua University”.
I was awarded the “Excellent Teaching Skill Award of Tsinghua University” twice (1st prize) in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
I was awarded the “Excellent Teaching Skill Award of Beijing” (2nd grade) in 2015.
I was awarded the “Teaching Achievement Award of Tsinghua University” three times (1st prize) in 2012 and (2st prize) in 2014/2016 respectively.
3. ADVISING AND MENTORING
Advising and Awards
-
I am enthusiastic to work with graduate students. I started to co-advise doctoral and master students in 2008, and I could have my own master and doctoral students from 2012 and 2016 respectively.
Three students co-advised by me have graduated with Ph.D. degrees, one of them got National Scholarship for Doctoral Students, one of them got the Sohu Scholarship and one of them won the excellent Ph.D. student of Beijing (only 1 in the department every year). The first jobs of these three students are as follows: researcher in Netease, researcher in National Security Service, and the other one got lecturer position in University of Science & Technology Beijing.
I advised or co-advised 8 master students, one of them got the Siebel Scholarship, which is the top-level scholarship in our department (5 students in the department each year). Besides, two of them won the excellent master thesis award from Tsinghua University, two of them won the National Scholarship for Master Students. The first jobs of these 8 students are pretty good, such as engineer in Sogou, Baidu, Huawei and researchers in Microsoft.
Currently I am advising 2 doctoral students and 9 master students, who make the affective computing group in Tsinghua an active group in this area. Many first-year students have published their work in high-level international conferences like ACM Multimedia, AAAI and IJCAI. Two of them have won the National Scholarship for Master Students.
I also put a lot of effort on advising SRT (Student Research Training) students (senior undergraduate students), more than 10 students (both from Tsinghua and from other universities) entered my lab and completed their (first) research projects in the past 10 years. They achieved the first prize of the SRT project in Tsinghua University twice (2012, 2015). I have been advising/co-advising over 10 undergraduate students for their final year thesis, and 2 of them won the excellent undergraduate thesis award from Tsinghua University (top 5%).
I was awarded “Excellent Advisor of SRT Project of Tsinghua University” twice (2012, 2015).
Mentoring and Awards
-
Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students is another very important and enjoyable task for me. I have been the head of the Department’s Student Affairs Committee from 2014, and the head of the Graduate Student Affairs from 2010 to 2014. I worked closely with student counselors and help students with their course selection as well as career designing. I am also in charge of the scholarship committee for students in the department from 2014.
I received Tsinghua University’s “Lin Feng” Outstanding Student Counselor Award in 2013 and Outstanding Student Counselor of Tsinghua University Award in 2015.
